The Liquidamber Styraciflua, or more commonly known as “Sweet Gum” tree, is a large tree valued for it’s medicinal uses. While many consider the hard spiky fruits that shed from the tree to be a landscaping nuisance, they actually are full of medicinal properties! These properties are: antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, anti inflammatory, anti hypertensive, and anti hepatotoxic. The fruit or “sweet gum ball” seeds contain shikimic acid, the original base material used in prescription influenza medications such as Tamiflu.
