Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) is a gentle but effective herb known for its great taste and smell. It has mild sedative and pain relief properties, making it an excellent relaxant to soothe anxiety and some aches and pains. Lemon balm is gentle enough even for babies, and is excellent for soothing an irritated digestive tract, making it particularly useful for issues such as colic and gas. The anti-spasmodic actions that work for the GI tract also help soothe menstrual pain, and it is also known for being a great mood lifter! Lemon balm is a natural febrifuge, meaning it can help to break a fever. It also has antiviral and antibacterial properties, making it specifically useful for all ages during cold & flu season! Some lesser known benefits of lemon balm are its ability to assist with cognitive function, increasing mental alertness and reducing agitation in some Alzheimers cases. The rosmarinic acid in lemon balm has shown potential to reduce the plaque forming proteins that cause damage to the brain in Alzheimers disease. Lemon balm improves cholesterol synthesis, and may help to lower triglyceride levels.
