For tea: use 1 tbsp of herbs per 8oz of water, steep until it reaches desired strength, this tea is best prepared hot.

Warning: use caution when handling steam and hot water

Herb Information:

Elecampane Root (Inula Helenium) is specifically indicated for bronchial cough. It may be used whenever copious catarrh is present. It can be helpful for general asthma and bronchial asthma. The mucilage has a relaxing effect, easing cough, while the oils bring about stimulation, so the herb both soothes irritation and acts as an expectorant, making stubborn mucus easier to cough up.

Horehound (Marrubium Vulgare) is a valuable plant for the treatment of bronchitis, especially when the person has a nonproductive cough. It relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchus while promoting mucus expectoration. It helps soothe the harshness of coughing while also making the cough more productive, clearing the lungs.

Coltsfoot (Tussilago Farfara) combines a soothing expectorant effect with an antispasmodic action. The leaves contain useful levels of zinc, a mineral shown to have marked anti inflammatory actions. Coltsfoot may be helpful for chronic or acute bronchitis, irritating coughs, whooping cough, and asthma. It’s soothing expectorant action makes it a valuable tool for soothing a number of respiratory issues.

Oregon Grape Root (Mahonia Aquifolium) may help with acute bronchitis due to its berberine content, which possesses antimicrobial and anti inflammatory properties. It is soothing to irritated lung and sinus tissue, while also helping to fight off infection.

Echinacea (Echinacea Purpurea) is especially useful for infections of the upper respiratory tract, including laryngitis, tonsillitis, the common cold, and other catarrhal conditions of the nose and sinus. Echinacea is also an excellent herb for boosting the immune system.

Elder Flower (Sambucus Sp.) is ideal for the treatment of colds and influenza, and a standardized black elderberry extract has demonstrated antiviral properties. This extract was effective in vitro against 10 strains of influenza virus. It also reduced the duration of flu symptoms to 3 to 4 days in a double blind placebo controlled, randomized study.

Chamomile (Matricaria Chamomile) the steam can help loosen mucus, providing temporary relief, while the chamomile’s anti inflammatory properties soothe the sinus airway. Chamomile is also great for relaxing, and may help with sinus headache.

Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris) compounds such as thymol and carvacrol, are thought to have antimicrobial and expectorant properties that may help clear the respiratory tract and fight off infections.

Oregano (Origanum Vulgare) has antimicrobial and anti inflammatory properties that may help relieve symptoms and fight off infections.
